More specifically, it concerns a polysiloxane-containing silica coating for glass fibers which are prepared by applying a solution of a polysiloxane onto the fibers. As is well known, glass fibers are used in several technical applications, such as in impregnation and insulation materials. However, one of the most important use is as reinforcing fillers in a variety of composite materials. In this context, glass fibers are usually coated with one or more polymeric substances to improve their wetting and adhesion to a polymeric matrix. The glass fibers used for this purpose in industry are conventionally drawn and as a result have a polymeric coating on each of their surfaces. These coatings play a significant role in the adhesion of the glass fibers to a polymer matrix. In the case of glass fibers having a polymeric coating, it is known that the strength of the composite material is directly dependent on the adhesion between the fiber and the matrix material. As can be gathered from the prior art, silica is a particularly appropriate coating for glass fibers, as it has a good compatibility with the polymer matrix, good adhesion to the fiber and is insoluble in water. Thus, the invention will be described with respect to the latter aspect of a glass fiber coating. For the purpose of the invention, the term glass fiber will be understood to mean a glass fiber having no polymeric coating on its surface. For similar reasons, the term silica coating is to be understood to mean a coating of silica on a glass fiber. Up to the present time, there are basically two principal methods of applying silica coating to glass fibers. One of these methods is referred to as the RHEED technique, the acronym standing for reactive hydrolysis and condensation, and which is also known as chemical vapor deposition (CVD). In this method, the polysiloxane is first vaporized and, then, condensed on the fiber surface, from where it slowly dissolves and is thereby deposited as silica. The other known technique is the sol-gel technique. This technique is described in WO 89/10244, where the glass fibers are first impregnated with a suitable sol, then after a washing step, the sol is vaporized and condensed as silica. 55cdc1ed1c
